Common Mistakes to Avoid in Web Design

No work can be done without ever making mistakes. In website design this is very true. Mistakes do happen. If you can learn from the mistakes others have made, it can save you a lot of expenses, loss and time wastage. Let us look at some of the things you can avoid for you to have a good website.

1. Poor navigation.
Users should be able to quickly browse through all your pages easily. Often times, users use links in search engines to access your site as opposed to directly visiting your home page. Make it easy for them every page of the site in an easy way and notice how much traffic this will bring your way.

2. Difficult to read text.
When you finish designing your website, test how readable your text is to see if your users can read through when they log in. What causes problems in readability?

A. Low contrast background and text. Text becomes most visible when the contrast between the text and the background is deep. Avoid using dark-colored text against a dark background. Similarly, do not use light colored text against light backgrounds. Black text against a white background works quite well in most cases.

B. Putting text on a textured background. Use only solid colored backgrounds to enhance the readability of text. Busy or textured texts make text difficult to read.

C. Using small text. Always try to use text that is large enough to read without straining. If you must use small text, ensure that the size can be increased in the browser. Do not use style sheets as some of them are set at a particular size and cannot be modified in browsers.

3. Slow download time.
The faster your site loads the better. If you can avoid needless music and animation then your site will have top speed uptime. These are the things that make sites take a long time to load. People prefer a websites that they can peep into quickly and get the information they need as opposed to one which will take minutes to load.

4. Avoid long pages.
Very long pages are boring to go through. Most visitors want information they can quickly pass over. If you can, provide few topics on each page with links to related topics that may be of interest to the viewer. This gives the visitor the opportunity to choose the topics they want to read.

5. Unattractive designs.
Be creative with colors and let the colors and designs you use be in harmony. Messy, clattered designs are a pain to the eyes and reading through them is such a hard task. Minimize the number of colors you use to three at most.

If you avoid the above mistakes, your website will be in a better position to rate high among viewers. You can mark other mistakes not mentioned here in the different websites you visit and avoid replicating them in your website.
